Future Stars - Romelu Lukaku

Over the last few months we've been hearing a lot about young Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku so it was only right Sports Portal included him as a future star.

A week doesn't seem to pass by when his name isnt linked to another potential suitor this summer.

Arsenal, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Real Madrid and Inter Milan are just a handful of the names thrown up so far.

After making his way into football at the age of 6, it wasn't until seven years later he joined Anderlecht and his career began to show real promise.

A ridiculous scoring record for the youth squad saw Lukaku promoted to the seniors in 2009, where he impressed in equal fashion.

Upon turning 16 a professional contract was signed, and soon after came a senior debut for the teenage sensation.

He now has a record of almost one in two for his club side, and has also finished top scorer in the Belgian Pro League (or Jupiler Pro League).

In addition to this he is now a member of the senior Belgian national squad after two years in the under-21s, where his scoring has continued.

Constantly likened to a young Didier Drogba, it is rumoured the Ivorian has phoned Lukaku to talk up Chelsea.

Where ever he does end up though, he must ensure he doesn't end up like many other footballing prodigies e.g. Freddy Adu.

The jewel in the Belgian footballing crown, he could carry the hope of a nation for well over a decade.

Capello hints at weakness

When the now infamous one sided 12-minute meeting took place at Wembley last year, it should've been the last time John Terry got near the England captaincy.

Fabio Capello himself even stated his decision to strip the armband from the Chelsea defender was irreversible.

That added to the farce witnessed in Copenhagen recently, when with the exception of Terry, every player, steward and fan seemingly got the chance to captain England.

It seemed to further highlight the Italians initial remarks.

Now though with Rio Ferdinand, the man who was awarded the captaincy, suffering from more and more injury woes and number two Steven Gerrard also out the door is open for JT.

The mind boggles.

It is one game versus Wales, why couldn't Wayne Rooney, Ashley Cole or Gareth Barry fill in in the absence of Ferdinand and Gerrard?

The Liverpool midfielder has also been praised by Capello when filling in for the Manchester United defender.

This latest move hints at desperation.

There is no doubt Terry is a born leader, but when the man in top job states "he will never be my captain again" the country took it as fact.

Now fans of the Three Lions will be questioning the motivation of the man who stirred such anticipation in the build up to last years World Cup.

Not only that, but communication in the FA could also come under the spotlight.

As Capello's own number two, Franco Baldini, phones Rio to assure him that the Terry rumours were simply that and to not take them seriously.

But a day later it is revealed that the rumours were spot on, and now we are hearing that Ferdinand is naturally very upset.

Lack of communication, desperation, and potential division in the squad and a manager who now doesn't stick to his word.

English football could be in trouble, and it could be highlighted in extreme fashion in the Millennium stadium later this month.

Spurs: Breath of fresh air in Champions League

Following an attacking goal fest of a group stage, Tottenham Hotspur progressed to the knockout stages of the Champions League full of confidence.

On the horizon came AC Milan, seven time winners of Europe's premier club competition.

Despite being huge underdogs Spurs players, staff and fans never doubted themselves, and returned to London with a terrific 1-0 victory.

It was widely regarded in Italy that Milan would stroll this tie, but now it would be a huge surprise should they not progress.

Harry Redknapp should be praised for refusing to reel in his sides attacking intent, and allowing them to stick to their guns with free flowing football.

Although, at times, their defence has looked suspect on the most part that has taken a back seat due to the quality of their play going forward.

It is no secret that this Spurs side has incredible strength, plus for a side out of the limelight for so long players who have experienced life at the top before.

No fear has clearly been the message of Tottenham in the Champions League this season, and long may it continue.

We have seen all season long Manchester City, Spurs' top four challengers, not exactly set the world alight with attacking football.

Whatever the reason for this, confidence, pressure or indeed the defence nature of an Italian manager, I'm sure most people will agree they are relieved Spurs won the top four race.

As we are set for another thrilling finale in the Premier League, Redknapp and his men have the perfect distraction and pick me up.

However far they get just progressing from the group stage, as winners, shows huge progress in itself.

Anything else now is just a bonus, but whose to say when this story will end.

Milan wrote of Spurs and see where it got them, anyone is Europe do it at your peril.

Transfer flops: Jean-Alain Boumsong

After a transfer that raised many eyebrows to start off with, it was soon evident that the public were right all along.

In his native France Jean-Alain Boumsong built up quite a reputation, alongside Philippe Mexes at the heart of the Auxerre defence.

However at four years at the club, and with his contract coming to an end Rangers lured Boumsong to Ibrox in the summer of 2004.

Despite his upcoming frailties in England though, he adapted quickly in Scotland and enhanced his reputation.

So much so that Newcastle manager Graeme Souness paid £8m in January 2005, ending his Scottish adventure after just half a season.

However the defensive mistakes began to creep in and it was clear he didn't possess the movement or nous to keep out Premier League strike forces.

After 18 months his unhappy spell came to end, as he moved to Juventus for barely a third of the fee Newcastle paid Rangers.

After another year and half he was on the move again, this time back to France with giants Lyon.
Citing the fact he felt he had more chances of making the French Euro 2008 squad with this transfer.

Boumsong is now playing his trade in Greece, after moving to Panathinaikos during last summers transfer window.

England V France: Time for the talking to stop

We are now a little over two days away from what is being billed as the crunch encounter of this years Six Nations campaign.

By the time England and France have finished doing battle at Twickenham on Saturday, the victorious team will be fully expected to go on and claim a grand slam.

In the build up it seems France are a little on edge ahead of the game.

We have seen Marc Lievremont shouting off, with his 'everyone hates England' jibe, attempting to wind up the hosts and provoke a response.

Instead we have seen Martin Johnson remain tight lipped, and Toby Flood openly mock the comments.

In addition the visitors to HQ have made several changes to their starting XV for the game.

Sebastien Chabal, Vincent Clerc, Dimitri Yachvili and Yannick Jauzion have all been recalled, while Maxime Medard is shifted to full back.

There's no doubt they will attempt to be more physical than Italy, and get in the faces of the English front row.

But in addition they will not concede sloppy ball like the Italians did, and will definitely not stand off and allow England to attack in flowing fashion.

England on the other hand have made just one change, as Andrew Sheridan comes back in after injury with Alex Corbisiero moving out of the side.

This seems a more settled side, and it is no secret that they have been scoring freely while France haven't exactly had a tight defence.

And despite French claims that they have a plan to contain Chris Ashton, the Northampton wing will no doubt be a threat.

On home soil, and form considered, England should run out the victors but it certainly won't be easy.

However after their next game at home to Scotland, a potential grand slam finale will rest on a tricky trip to Ireland.

How nice it is to be able to dream of a first English grand slam since 2003.

Future Stars - Douglas Costa

As a youngster in his native Brazil, Douglas Costa was surrounded by constant hype and talk of a big money move to Europe.

The attacking midfielder has been a long time target for Real Madrid and Manchester United, with Sir Alex Ferguson's side still heavily linked.

After coming through the youth ranks at Gremio, he made the step up into the first team.

And with only a handful of appearances under his belt, the rumours already started to circle.

However he stuck it out for two years, making 28 appearances and scoring two goals in the process.

When the time did come to make the big move to Europe, it wasn't one of the typical giants of the European game that snapped up the youngster.

Instead it was big spending Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk who signed the promising star.

His scoring rate has improved dramatically during his time in Europe, and the big names continue to be linked.

With Costa himself often fanning the flames of a potential move to Manchester United.

For now though he remains at Shakhtar as well as being an integral part of the Brazil under-20s side.

But watch this space, before too long Costa will be gracing the world stage at one the worlds best sides.

Whatever happened to: Freddy Adu

Remember him? The young American prodigy who was going to take the world by storm and put the United States on the footballing map.

A striker who broke an unbelievable amount of records and had the words top clubs, Manchester United, Chelsea and the like, clammering for his signature.

Promising huge sums of money in the process.

Well his lastest loan move to Rizespor in the Turkish Bank Asya 1 League highlights a dramatic fall from grace.

At the age of 14 he signed with DC United, and became the youngest player to appear in a Major League Soccer game.

Two weeks later Adu became the youngsest scorer in MLS history, and began to put his name on the world map.

2002 saw his United States under-17s debut, followed a year later by his first appearance for the under-20s.

This fast tracking added to the pressure on such young shoulders.

After four year at DC United, Adu shunned Europe for a move to Real Salt Lake.

However after less than a year, and two goals in 11 games, the big move finally came about.

But instead of joining one of Europe's elite, he rocked up in Portugal at Benfica.

In his first season he failed to set the side alite, matching his record for Real Salt Lake.

Following this came about a number of unsuccessful loans.

Firstly Monaco, who declined the offer of purchasing the forward at the end of the deal, Belenenses followed although he was released after a change of manager.

Greek side Aris Thessaloniki were next, were an 18 month deal ended early as Adu was phased out of the side.

Trails with several clubs followed, before his latest move to Rizespor.

This history does bring with it one question, how does such a young talent fade away so quickly?

My best guess would be all the pressure heaped on such a young boy, plus the celebrity status, became too much or he became too relaxed with it.

A youngster who was supposed to finally bring football, or soccer if you will, into the public domain amongst the other top sports in the USA.

But alas it was just not meant to be!
