Overrated Premier League Players who Have Already Been Exposed This Season

As we enter the second international period of the Premier League season, let us gaze back at what has happened thus far and judge those who haven't quite lived up to the hype thus far.

Some may well point to the early nature of the season, we are after all only seven games in, but in spite of that there are players country wide who have disappointed for one reason or another.

Be it a striker who is struggling to continue to add to a stunning start last term, a goalkeeper who has set himself high standards through his Premiership career, or an import which to some extent shocked the footballing world.

You may well have already figured out the three players who Sports Portal are going to highlight are, but if you haven't let us talk you through our reasons and why they feature.

Papiss Cisse - Newcastle United

One major reason why Newcastle soared to a fifth placed finish in the Premier League last season, was their january acquisition of Papiss Demba Cisse from Bundesliga side Freiburg.

Here his impressive goalscoring record had impressed many around Europe, and he also became the African to have scored the most goals in one season in Germany.

After arriving in the North-East he plundered 13 goals, many of which were wonder strikes, and it seemed he was something of a bargain.

This season has been an eye opener, however, and he has struggled to find the back of the net.

He two goals in the 2012/13 campaign coming in the League Cup against Manchester United, and at home to Bordeaux in the Europa League.

Those connected with the club will point to the young nature of the season, but will secretly be hoping he can net a Premier League goal sooner rather than later,

They will not want a Fernando Torres esque situation from last season happening.

Pepe Reina - Liverpool

For many reasons Pepe Reina may well be a Liverpool legend, after all he has displaced many previous records held at the club.

In December 2005, just a few short months after being recruited by Rafael Benitez, he chalked up 11 successive clean sheets.

In addition to this he recorded 28 shut outs in his first fifty games, surpassing the great Ray Clemence.
 
On top of that for three straight season he triumphed in winning the Premier League Golden Gloves, and performed heroics, albeit after some questionable goalkeeping, in the 2006 FA Cup final.

This season though some rather high profile gaffes have begun to creep in, on an all to frequent basis.

Of course those who stand between the sticks are on a small wire between success and failure, but it is always worrying when these mistakes creep in a little too much.

After last seasons poor showing Liverpool are keen to climb back up the league, and Reina will be hoping he can put in some stellar performances to help with that quest.

Julio Cesar - Queens Park Rangers

A Goalkeeper who arrived at Loftus Road with a big reputation, having enjoyed huge success during a seven year stay at Italian giants Inter Milan.

After joining in 2005 he quickly established himself as number one, overtaking the legendary Francesco Toldo, and set about bringing five Scudetti and a Champions League title to the club amongst other honours.

When Samir Handanovic arrived in the summer, having played nearly 200 times for Udinese, it spelt the end of the Brazlians stay at the San Siro though.

The two time Seria A goalkeeper of the year and 2009 Uefa Club Goalkeeper of the Year set off for England, determined to show his former employers they were wrong to get rid.

However, he has only proved what they perhaps already knew, that he is no longer part of the elite goalkeeping community.

It is harsh to lay the blame at one man for a club being bottom of the league, but his decision making has hardly been exemplary.

If he can improve between the sticks QPR may have a chance, if this slide continues it is difficult to see if they can raise themselves from the abyss.

Could Ajax Duo be Heading to the Premiership?

The Dutch club is revered worldwide for the undoubted quality that has come through what seems like the revolving door of its academy.

Marco Van Basten, Patrick Kluivert, Frank Rijkaard and the mercurial Johan Cryuff are just some of the household names that we can thank the Dutch club for introducing to the world.

Now it seems two of the new breed could be set for moves away, but could their destination be England and the Premier League?

Long Term

Christian Eriksen has reportedly been a long-term target for many an English club, one particular example being Manchester United, who are again being mooted as a potential destination .

The playmaker turned down a proposal from neighbours Manchester City last summer, but as the Sunday Mirror is reporting, two clubs have already opened talks with his club this year.

One of those is reportedly Russian outfit Zenit St Petersburg, but the 20-year-old has previously spoken of his desire to join either Barcelona or Sir Alex Ferguson's side.

Possessing a speed in spotting openings and quick decision making it is no doubt this creativity that stands out as a primary attribute, but could this ensure he is a success in England should he arrive?

Balancing

Despite having already sold Jan Vertonghen to Tottenham Hotspur, it is thought that Ajax still have to sell to balance the books.

This has led Vernon Anita to continue to be linked away from the reigning Eredivisie champions.

It is Newcastle United who are believed to be leading the race to secure his signature, having been mentioned in the same breath for some time.

Speaking to the Sunday Mirror, Anita's agent Harry Lulofs said: “There is serious interest from Newcastle. A move to the Premier League is so tempting for him. We have to resolve the situation quickly.”

The player himself added: "I’ve two years left on my contract. But I want some clarity from Ajax about my ­future. We are having a meeting with Marc ­Overmars, the club’s new sporting director, to get a clear view of what the club wants.”

Would the man who is equally adept at left-back and defensive midfield be a good addition at the Sports Direct Arena?

Group C

Croatia

The Croats qualified for Euro 2012 the hard way after finishing behind Greece in their group and having to go through the play offs.  There they drew a potentially tricky tie with Turkey, but made light work of an away day that has got the better of some of the very best sides out there.  A convincing 3-0 win in Istanbul was enough to see Slaven Bilic's side though, with the second leg finishing a 0-0 draw.

Not the force they once were, Croatia still occupy one of the top 10 places in the Fifa rankings and have done since 2006.  The experienced players in the squad will carry a lot of the burden, but there is every chance they could make the Quarter Final.  Spain will top the group, but any of the other three could occupy second spot.

Key Man

People may disagree with this choice, but Sports Portal are going to plump for Darijo Srna as the key man for Croatia.  A one time right back Srna has always been widely renowned for his attacking intentions, something which has recently prompted Bilic to switch him further up the field.

The captain will have to be at his creative best to ensure his side have a chance of progression, his frequent goals could also come in handy.

One To Watch

A key, if not the key, man in the Croatia line up is Luka Modric.  He shot to prominence during the last European Championships, but luckily for them Tottenham Hotspur clinched his signature before the tournament even began.  After working so hard to keep him last summer, chairman Daniel Levy could face a similar battle this summer.  Especially if he tries to use the tournament to showcase his talent to potential suitors.

Italy

A nation once again plunged into chaos after a near perfect qualifying campaign.  Eight wins and two draws doesn't exactly tell the whole story though, the old football once associated with the nation is being shed.  Cesare Prandelli tries to have his players impose themselves on the opposition through an intricate passing style, although their defence was the best across the whole of qualifying.  Something that runs back to the Italy sides of old with only two goals conceded.

However, all their good work could now count for nothing.  Another match fixing scandal has reared it's ugly head with players dropping out to clear their names, and a dawn raid on their training camp all hampering Italian build up.  The thoughts they could be kicked out seem to have passed, but the 3-0 friendly defeat to Russia show how much this has affected them

Key Man

The Italian squad is littered with star names, but one man who continues to keep his side ticking over is Andrea Pirlo.  The enigmatic middle man left AC Milan last summer, but he has highlighted what the San Siro has been missing by leading Juventus to the Seria A title.

His calming presence in the middle of the park could be just what Italy need to get over their recent bad results that have come as a result of the above mentioned circumstances.

One To Watch

The world just cannot stop talking about Mario Balotelli.  His antics this have lit up the Premier League, entertaining and dividing opinion in the same breathe.  He is, however, a terrific footballer who is capable of turning a game on it's head in an instant.  What he needs to do though is just get his head down and focus on the football if that happens we could see miracles.  What we don't need is ridiculous provocation following he statement that he would kill anyone who is racist towards him.

Republic of Ireland

Following the infamous Thierry Henry handball incident that denied the nation a place at the 2010 World Cup, it is only right that the Republic of Ireland have followed it up by qualifying for Poland/Ukraine.  It would be a big ask for them to qualify beyond the group stage in only their second appearance, but if they can instill some of the belief of the previous two years leading to this then they have every chance of doing so.

Built on a solid foundation with creativity further up the field Ireland finished second to Russia in the qualification phase and entered the play offs.  Here they faced Estonia, and became another side to progress courtesy of a tremendous performance away from home.  The 4-0 away victory was followed up with a 1-1 home draw; can Giovanni Trapattoni work yet more miracles.

Key Man

There is only one man in the Irish side that is worthy of this title, Robbie Keane.  Despite a yard of pace having been lost Keane remains the chief goal threat, and highlighted his credentials during a brief loan spell at Aston Villa earlier this year.  He followed that up by setting up the only goal in the MLS Cup final, with LA Galaxy duly triumphing.

Keane was the main man at the World Cup in 2002, the last tournament that they qualified for, and he will need to find similar form this summer.

One To Watch

It is rare that a British or Irish footballer leaves these shores to ply their trade abroad, so when Spartak Moscow maid Celtic nearly £10m for Aiden McGeady it was something of a surprise.  Together with Damien Duff on the other wing he will be responsible for being the creative hub of the side, providing the ammunition for those further up the pitch.

McGeady could also use this summer's spectacle to engineer a move back closer to home, something that is being mentioned with increasing regularity.

Spain

What more can be said about Spain that hasn't been already.  The current World Cup and European Championship holders will no doubt have a target on their back, but who would back against them triumphing again this time round. 

The one big question is will they be able to cope without Carlos Puyol and David Villa who are to miss out through injury?  Sports Portal's guess is no chance, the strength contained within this squad is what has led to this success.  Vicente Del Bosque will no doubt have had contingency plans should any of his key players get sidelined.

Key Man

In a side full of superstars there is one man who keeps them ticking over, Xavi.  He is the lynch pin of both his national and club side, slotting passed through seemingly non-existent gaps at times.  His outstanding pass completion of nearly 90% at Euro 2008 is exceeded by the one that says he completed a pass every 57 seconds in the World Cup.

One To Watch

In a team full of superstars, there are also those players who are set to future stars of this national set up.  Fernando Llorente could well be trusted with a starting spot while Jesus Navas could be relied upon to provide spark from the wings, if things aren't going their way for a change.  Sports Portal though are going to go for Llorente's Athletic Bilbao team mate Javi Martinez.

His phenomenal displays have certainly caught the eye this season, with English fans taking note during the games against Manchester United.  This has led to many gossip column inches being filled with rumours of a move to the Premier League, a strong showing this summer would do little to quash those.
 

Future Stars - Lucas Rodrigues Moura da Silva

This is a player that we have been hearing a lot about recently, with the youngster seemingly being linked to every club in Europe never mind just the Premier League.  Lucas, or Lucas Rodrigues Moura da Silva to give him his full name, is no doubt an incredibly talented footballer which is emphasised by the huge price that is on his head.

Lucas started his career at Brazlian giants Corinthians, only managing three years in their youth set up however before an early move of clubs ensued.  Sao Paulo signed up the enigmatic midfielder, and he has since gone from strength to strength.

He stepped up to the first team in 2010 and made his debut in September of the same year, under the name 'Marcelinho.'  This was due to the fact he attended Marcelinho Carioca's football school, but he quickly went back on this and informed of his intention to be called Lucas.

From an early age it was clear he was something special, especially when his club captain Rogerio Ceni announced his importance to the club.  In addition to stating the future impact that Lucas could have, Ceni also announced Lucas could possess such talent that he could be the best since Kaka to come through the ranks at Sao Paulo.

Last year the international scene beckoned, where he has now hit double figures in appearances and could be crucial to any future success.

It is not known what the future holds for Lucas, with Brazilian football going through somewhat of a renaissance at the moment.  Past greats are returning and young stars seem to want to stay, but Europe will surely be on the agenda at some point.

His club side, it is said, have placed a £70m price on his head, a figure that could perhaps be deterring sides at the moment.  Manchester United, Liverpool and Real Madrid have all been muted amongst others, and when the time does come he will surely move for big bucks but for a fee significantly less than that mentioned.

Lucas could become a crucial figure at any of the continents biggest clubs, whilst also being key to his nations World Cup hopes on home soil in 2014.

Henry the returning hero

If the excitement surrounding the return of a hero hadn't already been stirred up enough, the antics of last night have certainly whipped a furore around the Emirates.  The sight of Thierry Henry netting a 78th minute winner just ten minutes after taking to the field has captured the imagination of football fans worldwide.  Well, all except a small pocket of Yorkshire where thousands thought their team were to gain a reply aginst Arsenal for the second season running.

Already immortalised outside the stadium of his beloved club, the Frenchman's celebration exuded the sheer delight of scoring on his second debut.  Arsene Wenger summed up the situation saying:  "He is a special player, he was already a legend here and he just added a bit more to the whole story."

While Henry himself remarked:  "I came back from holiday 15 days ago. I never thought I was going to play for Arsenal again or score a winner. "I don't know what to say. I love the club and I hope I can do more.
"I hope it won't be the last one. The feeling I had when I scored was amazing.
"I rejoined the club as a fan; before I wasn't. 
"Scoring a goal when you support the team, now I know how some of the guys who played for Liverpool or Man United or Chelsea felt when they scored a goal for the club they support."

Celebrating for New York Red Bulls

Doubts were raised when the news inevitably broke.  Weren't their more appropraite younger options available who would be a benefit for the longer term, and how would so many of the squad cope playing with someone they openly admit is a hero.  All that though has already been dispelled, and Simon Garyson's remark that it was "written in the stars" for Henry to grab the winner summing up the occasion.

The way in which he left in 2007 is now well and truly forgotten, when rumors of squad fall outs led to his desire to move on to Barcelona.  His 227th goal in 371 appearances, including 12 in 12 against Leeds, is surely going to be added to during his two month loan spell from New York Red Bulls.

Whatever rollercoaster is ahead during this stint, it will be a pleasure to watch a master at work at a club which will forever be in his heart.

Spotlight on - FC Copenhagen

Football Club København, or FC Copenhagen, have a very brief history but it hasn't been without it's controversies. From a manager that lasted one match to a much celebrated year of foundation, the near two decades that this club has been around have certainly not been quiet.

History

It is said to be "the greatest year in Danish Football History," the year this club came to fruition and the year Denmark suprised everybody by roaring to European Championship success.  It was of course 1992, and the reason I say the club "came to fruition" is because in actual fact FC Copenhagen dates back to 1876.  However back then they were known as Kjøbenhavns Boldklub (KB) and Boldklubben 1903 (B1903), making a unique situation which means that now the club's first team is a representation of two clubs.  With KB founded in 1876 this also makes them mainland Europe's oldest football club and first league winners,which they won 15 times, compared to their then rivals B1903s seven.

They slogged it out for many decades, with KB actually trying to run professional football before failing to garner enough financial support, before coming to this unique conclusion.  When Alex Friedmann, the wealthy backer of B1903 couldn't guarantee his support, a process was put in place to merge the two sides.

FC Copenhagen ply their trade at The Parken Stadium

KB were overtly keen to be playing professional football, while their rivals had players in place but no concrete stability heading into the future.  The rebuilding of the national stadium, Parken, also provided a top class arena to ply their trade.  FC Copenhagen was born, while the other two clubs are rooted in local communities around the Danish capital, seeking out talent for what is in essence a shared first team.

The club have gone on to be the focal point of Danish football since then, sticking to the principles and ambitions they set themselves nearly two decades ago:

• To be among the top 3 in the Danish Supliga and/or win the Danish cup and therefore qualify for one of the European competitions every year.
• To have a responsible economy
• To build up a local fan base and establish a wide corporate backing
• Play attractive positive football
• In the long term, to spearhead the Danish attack on European club honours.

 
Danish League titles have continued to roll in, maintaining one the principles they set up in the early 1990s.  It is though on the European front where they have begun to make an impression.  In the 2006/07 Champions League wins over Celtic and Manchester United at home instilled belief, whilst in 2010/11 FC Copenhagen became the first side from Denmark into the last sixteen.

Managers

Being a relatively new side with a limited history under this moniker, a huge influx of managers there hasn't been (although the 13 and two caretakers that have taken the hot seat is still a rather large number).  Benny Johansen was charged with leading the side in it's debut season, taking charge for two seasons and boasting an impressive win percentage of over 51.72 but winning only a solitary Superliga Championship.

Fans of The Lions had to sit through 8 more managers though, before another championship title arrived.  This was thanks to the only non Scandinavian to have taken up the reins a certain Roy Hodgson who delivered in his only season at the club.

It was here, in the early 2000s, that the domination started, firstly under Hans Backe and then Stale Solbakken.  The latter proving to be the most successful in the history of the club, delivering numerous amounts of silverware and a win percentage of 59.26.  Christian Andersen had the stormiest spell, managing a solitary game before being fired.

A wide array of fine footballing talent has taken to the Parken pitch adorned in the colours of FC Copenhagen.  Lars Jacobsen, Christian Poulsen, Jesper Gronkjaer and Brede Hangeland are just some of the names that will be familiar to fans of the English Premier League.

By far the biggest name to have plied his trade at the club is Brian Laudrup, who in 1999 managed 12 games and scored 2 goals.

However it would perhaps be Lars Hojer or Todi Jonsson that are remembered with most fondness.  Both managed 54 goals, a club record, doing it in 166 and 167 games respectively.

Transfer flops: Bebe

The unknown Portuguese winger whipped up a storm of speculation when he signed for Manchester United last year.  Who was this person who it's rumoured Sir Alex Ferguson had never seen play? Was it true that he was offered around Europe for next to nothing? And did he really play in the Homeless World Cup?

Well allow Sports Portal to clear up these little dilemmas.  At the unveiling of his new signing, Ferguson did indeed admit that he had never witnessed the prodigy play or even seen a video.  With other European big guns circling United were positive they had to act quickly, the Red Devils boss said at the time (to the Daily Mail): 

"I didn't see any videos of him, it's the first time. Normally, as in the case of Javier (Hernandez) and Chris (Smalling), I saw plenty of video footage of them.
"You've got to trust your staff at times and our scout in Portugal was adamant we must do something quickly.
"So were one or two other clubs and that's where you have to make quick decisions in life and I'm not too bad about that. I also spoke to Carlos Queiroz (his former assistant at United and now Iran coach) about him.
"Sometimes you have to go on an instinct, you look at material. You look at their age and whether they're bringing pace, balance, desire to play and things like that."

The Homeless World Cup debacle is a thing of fiction, after it was proven that he played for partner organisation CAIS.  He did compete at The European Street Football Festival in 2009 for this partner project, but you can dispel any other rumours.  As for point number two, we'll get to that soon.

Following stints at amateur sides Bebe was signed by Estrela Da Amadora in the summer of 2009, where he was widely regarded as the finest player on their books.  However financial problems took their toll on the side, and subsequently he was offered around Europe for as little as £125,000.  No takers come forward though, with PSV Eindhoven saying they rejected the chance to take the youngster on a free as they didn't know anything about him.

Vitoria Guimaraes eventually signed the player, after cash flow problems worsened at Estrela Da Amadora.  From here on in, it must have seemed like a fairytale.  A glittering pre-season earned the interest of English Champions Manchester United, who eagerly snapped up their man for an undisclosed fee (thought to be around £7.4m).  After his short stint at Guimaraes, where he stayed around five weeks only, he failed to live up to expectations in the Premier League.

Following some very abject performances in his first season, including a poor display at home to non-league Crawley town, he was farmed out on the loan at the start of the 2011/12 campaign.  Besiktas was the destination where it was hoped he could turn in some stellar performances, and return to the North-West rejuvenated ready to fight for a starting place.  However a cruciate ligament injury has ruled him out for at least six months, so it could be a while yet before we see if he really has what it takes to make it at the top level.

Sunderland

Wearside has seen plenty of comings and goings in the close season, with Steve Bruce not hanging around in securing some of his targets. Last seasons 10th place finish was a good effort, and it will certainly take a lot to match or beat that. However smart purchases have been made, and if they can make the Stadium of Light a fortress there's no reason why they can't show improvement.

Goalkeeper

Keiren Westwood has arrived to add depth to an already strong goalkeeping line up, Craig Gordon is still their, despite the continuous links back to Scotland, while Steve Mignolet has also impressed. An area that no doubt has a lot of strength.

Defence

There's plenty of experience in this backline, highlighted by the fact they could field a back four consisting of ex Manchester United players. The main problem though could be gelling the new boys in with the new squad, something that is potentially a problem throughout their side.

Midfield


After the loss of Jordan Henderson, and bolstered by the huge influx of cash, Bruce has been busy trying to add some steel and creativity in the middle of the park. Sebastian Larsson could perhaps be his finest signing, securing the Swedes signature on a free transfer. While Lee Cattermole will once again lead the side, not the rumours linking him with a move away have subsided.

Forwards

Despite the loss of Darren Bent, Bruce has gone out and strengthened but it is Asamoah Gyan who will be trusted with leading the front line. Frazier Campbell's impressive development could continue, while Ji Dong-Won will add strength, while Connor Wickham is a tremendous prospect.

Manager

Bruce has been doing a good job in the North East, and the squad he now has at his disposal is the finest during his time at Sunderland. Some good results, and a well placed finish in the Premier League will have to be had to justify his outlay though.

Areas to Strengthened

As previously stated this side has strengthened all aspects already, so their isn't much left for Bruce to do except prepare his side for this Saturday's opening fixture.

Expectations

With some of the players at his disposal and the amount spent, despite the fee's received for Henderson and Bent, expectations will quite justifiably be high. A top half finish will have to be had to please the Sunderland faithful.

Norwich City

Living the dream probably falls a little short of describing the ecstasy Norwich City fans are feeling at the moment. Paul Lambert has worked miracles in getting back to back promotions, and a return to the big time must have seemed light years away not so long ago. Everyone will be looking at Queens Park Rangers as the new threat, but this side would well be the surpise package of the Premier League 2011/12.

Goalkeeper

Ex Everton trainee John Ruddy was never really given a proper chance at Goodison Park, and after numerous loan moves he excelled after signing for The Canaries last summer. Maybe not the most experienced keeper in the division, but will revel in proving his old employers that they were wrong to discard him.

Defence

With two new defensive signings already made, Paul Lambert clearly thought they were a little short here. This will be the key to ultimately deciding if this side stays in the Premier League beyond this season, if the defence copes they could swin but if overwhelmed they will definitely sink.

Midfield

Again strengthening has taken place here, and largely throughout the squad Lambert has gone for young talent eager to prove themselves. He beat a host of clubs to the signings of each of the three that have arrived to bolster the middle of the park. However a large chunk of the squad that got them here will be given the chance to keep their top flight status, as promised by the boss after promotion was secured.

Forwards


Grant Holt is the enigma of the Norwich attack, plundering the goals that helped drive his side to the runners up spot in the Championship. Steve Morison has been added, who they hope can step up, and James Vaughan, who is adament he still has what it takes to make it in the top flight. However a striker of proven Premiership talent is still missing, and this could be their major flaw.

Manager

Lambert cannot currently put a foot wrong in his part of the world, such is the esteem he is held in after turning around this side around. The ludicrous terms 'fallen giant' et al can now be forgotten about, but it doesn seem like he could have his work cut out in keeping his side in the big time. Although that was said about a second straight promotion and look what happened their.

Areas to Strengthen

Some players have arrived, and it seems that Norwich are largely relying on players to step up to the demands of the Premier League than shell out over the odds on experience. This could be risk, or it could breathe new life and confidence into his squad.

Manchester United

After over taking close rivals Liverpool with 19 Premier League titles last season, confidence is at an all time high on the red half of Manchester. Chelsea and their City rivals will be their closest challengers this time round, but it is hard to look past Sir Alex Ferguson's men clinching their 20th title this time round.

Goalkeeper

Long term target David De Gea has arrived to take over from the now retired Edwin Van Der Sar. The Dutchman has been a terrific servant to many sides, and shone in his later years at Old Trafford. Anders Lindegaard came in in January as back up, but the big problem here is that there could be one too many keepers on the books.

Defence

Another area in which this side is ridiculously strong, and more bodies have added even more depth. Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand will be the first choice, injuries providing that is. Chris Smalling and new boy Phil Jones provide very adequate back up though, and could well be the future England partnership.

Midfield

WIth Paul Scholes retiring the rumour mill is in over drive about a replacement, with Wesley Sneijder the name cropping up more than most. However despite this, the Midfield is still strong with steel and creativity in abundance. With Ashley Young their is now another dimension added, and depth is certainly here for all to see.

Forwards


Wayne Rooney will once again be the focal point of this sides attacking intent, but after his excellent debut season Javier Hernandez will be expected to perform to that level once again. Dimitar Berbatov could have to seek pastures new if he wants regular first team football, and that highlights even more strength in this team.

Manager

Everyone knows the successes that the Scot has had, and nothing knew can be said about this man that has not already been said. The pressure will certainly be on the next man in the hot seat when he eventually steps aside.

Areas to Strengthen

On the outset this side looks complete, plenty of depth with experience and young talent blended. Sneijder could well be the final piece of the jigsaw, and would be a huge hit in the Premiership with this side.

Expectations

Another League title will be the least of the expectations places upon Manchester United this season. A good showing in Europe, and maybe avenging last seasons final defeat would be desired but it is hard to look beyond Barcelona.

Manchester City

The new side on the end of every supporters hatred? Perhaps. Jealousy? Probably. But everyone concerned with this club can't afford to be too bothered with those outside looking in, they need to improve, or at least consolidate, on last seasons achievements. The whole country wants them to fail, but the reality is that they have now turned the Premier League into a three horse race.

Goalkeeper

Joe Hart has well and truly consolidated himself at number one, with Shay Given now sold to Aston Villa to stave off the splinters from that City bench. He is prone to the odd mistake, but nobodies perfect, and fans worldwide will have to get used to him because he surely has over a decade of being not just his club's first choice but England's too. Stuart Taylor provides decent enough back up.

Defence

Despite already being strong in this area, two more bodies have arrived to bolster a stern defence further. Youngster Stefan Savic, coveted by many of the top European sides, is now at Eastlands along side Gael Clichy, who snubbed Liverpool to join Roberto Mancini's men. In reality they could probably field two very strong back fours, so competition for places should ensure that level of performance stays high.

Midfield


Adam Johnson, lauded as one of the new breed for the national side, can't even get into the starting eleven at his club. That shows the level that this side are now competing. James Milner is expected to have a more prominent role this time round, where Nigel De Jong and Yaya Toure continue to endear themselves to the city faithful.

Forwards

New record signing Sergio Aguero has arrived from Atletico Madrid, raised expectations further still. Edin Dzeko, a £27m arrival from Wolfsburg in January, should also have s heavy role this year despite his poor performances so far. Mario Balotelli, an undoubted talent, should also stay even after his 'I don't like Manchester' moan recently. Carlos Tevez is still seeking a way out, as are Roque Santa Cruz, Craig Bellamy and Emmanuel Adebayor who were all left behind when the first team jetted out to the States.

Manager

Roberto Mancini seems to have the confidence of everyone concerned with the club, and has built a side which should compete on all levels. The FA Cup win last year ended the long wait for silverware, whilst also ridding Old Trafford of the banner that has taunted them all these years. A first Champions League outing could be the real test, but with the calibre of player at his disposal it wouldn't be surprising to see them reach the latter stages.

Areas to Strengthen

No where in this side really needs any more strength. They have strength in depth at all levels, however if a truly world class player came up they would no doubt try their hardest to clinch the signature. Especially if that person is Wesley Sneijder and bitter rivals Manchester United also want him.

Expectations

They are no doubt very very high. Consolidation on last years league position will be the minimum that will be expected, while more silverware would be desired. However if a real push for the title is made that will show great progression, and you would think would keep the majority of the fans and board room happy.

Everton

David Moyes continues to defy all logic with his management of Everton. The Toffees have been long renowned for having not much cash to splash, and as a result one of the smallest squads in the Premier League. Something emphasised by just 20 players starting a Premier League game in 2010/11, the fewest throughout the league. However he still run neighbours Liverpool close, and gave them a mighty fright that he could topple them yet again. After just missing out though, a more than respectable 7th place was achieved.

Goalkeeper

Tim Howard has transformed himself since his move to Merseyside from Manchester United in 2006. He has proved himself to be once of the league most reliable, and could be partly thanked for keeping Everton surging up the league year upon year. In Back up, last years signing Jan Mucha still waits for a sniff of a chance.

Defence

There are some very solid performers contained within this back four, something that is emphasised by the persistent rumours linking many of them away. Joseph Yobo could well depart, but Leighton Baines and Phil Jagielka are also getting the rumours treatment this summer. Tony Hibbert proves to be ever reliable and Phil Neville is still going strong, if Moyes can keep hold of these this shouldn't be too much of a problem next term.

Midfield

Another area that is strong, but similarly to the Defence it is all on the surface with strength in depth very questionable. Leon Osman continues to perform at the highest level, while Jack Rodwell and Marouane Fellaini are two more of this squad surrounding rumours they are soon to be off to pastured new. It is of no doubt though that Mikel Arteta and Tim Cahill are the crown jewels of this side, their performances crucial to the success of the side. And as it looked like they could stay, Everton could be set for another good finish next term. Although Diniyar Bilyaletdinov still continues to divide opinion.

Forward

Possibly the weakest part of this side. Louis Saha, when fit is a tremendous striker, but that is all too rare. Jermaine Beckford performed OK after his free transfer from Leeds United, while Yakubu was farmed out on loan to Leicester City and doesn't seem to have a future at the club. Their are however some exiting youngster in the ranks, Joao Silva and Magaye Gueye are definite prospects.

Manager


David Moyes seems to have performed miracles here, and they should be thankful he loves the club so much that he continues to stay. The Scot is ingrained in the fabric of Everton now, and could be here for years to come.

Areas to Strengthen

If players leave they will definitely need to be replaced as numbers are thin, but apart from free transfers and nominal fees selling could be the only way to raise funds. A prolific striker needs to be added, an injury prone main striker and goals from Midfield can only get you so far.

Expectations

Despite the small squad and budget such is the job that Moyes has done at Everton, expectations continue to rise. The Premier League will be the most fiercely competitive for years, but a top half finish should definitely be achieved.

Blackburn Rovers

Under Venky's it was widely expected that Blackburn would be a tad flashy this summer, but so far this summer their only big venture into the transfer market has been to sell Phil Jones to Manchester United. Rumours are rife around Ewood Park, and new bodies will need to be brought in if Steve Kean is to improve on last seasons 15th place finish.

Goalkeeper

This isn't really an issue at the Lancashire based side, with Paul Robinson continuing to draw plaudits and Mark Bunn an adequate replacement. After his arrival from Spurs the ex England international has never failed to impress, so this is definitely a solid foundation from which to build.

Defence

A potential sticky point with only just over two weeks left to the curtain raiser of this seasons Premier League. Jones has already left and rumours continue to link Chris Samba to both Spurs and Arsenal, this will no doubt bring in money to be respent but will a player of equal quality be found? Michel Salgado isn't getting any younger, but Captain Ryan Nelsen will continue to be a rock at the hear at the Rovers defence.

Midfield

David Dunn is no doubt the gem of the side, whose creativity is heavily relied upon. However with increasing injury problems over the last couple of seasons, Blackburn's midfield has begun to grow independent of Dunn. Morten Gamst Pedersen now looks likely to stay after many windows of being linked away, Steven N'Zonzi continues to impress while Argentine Mauro Formica should play a more central role this time round.

Forwards

It is on the front line where this side could need the most strengthening. Nikola Kalinic and El Hadji Diouf look certain to leave, while Junior Hoilett is staying but he can by no means be expected to lead the line and provide a huge goals tally to propel the side up the table. Ruben Rochina, who arrived at the same time as Formica, should figure more this season but they still seem a bit short.

Manager

 

Steve Kean was thrust in charge of this side after the shock sacking of predecessor Sam Allardyce, and came dangerously close to falling to falling off that tight rope himself. There is some talent within this squad, but it seems like not quite enough to stay away from a relegation dog fight just yet.

Areas to Strengthen 

With a Jones shaped void in defence that could quickly be joined by Samba, it is imperative that a possible leaky back line is patched up fast. Without new additions here the Premier League's front men would run riot. In addition to this one maybe two striker need to be added to boost fire power, and if you believe the rumour mills Kean is intensely looking at the area. If there's any cash left after that, maybe a bit more creativity in the middle of the park.

Expectations

With the squad currently at his disposal, kean could expect nothing more than a place perched just above the drop zone. Similarly to last season. However with some good signings, a mid tabled finish is more than achievable.

Arsenal

The Gunners have huge title aspirations ahead of the new season, but after six seasons without a trophy and persistent rumours of exits is that realistic? One big name has already left, two more and mooted to be following and as yet Arsene Wenger doesn't seem too concerned. The Frenchman who a few years ago seemed invincible is starting to divide opinion, can he silence those critics in the 2011/2012 campaign.

Goalkeeper

It seem like this has forever been the troubled spot for Arsenal, with fans for the last couple of years blaming this as a lack of failure. Jens Lehmann brought back last year, with rotation/injuries seeming all three regular keepers, Manuel Almunia, Wojciech Szczesny and Lukasz Fabianski, all given chances to impress but failing to do so. A reliable man between the sticks is a must have for any side, and despite the stubborn 'I know best' attitude that Wenger seems to have adopted in recent times, unless he rectifies this situation his barren streak will continue.

Defence

 

With Thomas Vermaelen back this term after a lay off last season, what seemed a slightly leeky defence, especially from set pieces, could be slightly patched up. Although that doesn't take away from the fact new additions are needed, and fast. Defenders were already a priority before Gael Clichy headed up north, so now they are needed more than ever. Despite Wengers insistence that his defence held it's own last year, it was clear to see it simply did not. As already mentioned, conceeding too many from set pieces can be a huge problem. Continue the trend this season and trouble will undoubtedly follow.

Midfield

There certainly isn't ever a lack of creativity in the middle of the park at The Emirates, but two of the usual suspects could be off anytime soon. Samir Nasir seems to have been linked to everyone of note, Manchester City more than most, while Cesc Fabregas' on off move back to Barcelona wore thin years ago but could come to a head this summer. Add that to the other 'squad' players rumoured to be going and Arsenal could find themselves a little short. The wise old heads need a good season, and from and England perspective the contunine rise of Jack Wilshire wouldn't be too bad.

Forward

This doesn't seem to be a big problem, with no doubt one of the Leagues finest in Robin Van Persie, if they can keep him fit, gracing their front line. Ivorian Gervinho has also arrived, although he could operate out wide if needed, along with Marouane Chamakh who failed to replicate his early season from and drifted off. The Morrocan international certainly needs to find some form, and goals, this season. Nicklas Bendtner seems out of the door already, but it will be this postion which is bottom of the list for strenghthening.

Manager

It is of no doubt to any of the footballing world the massive impact Wenger has had on the English game, with his brand of football also a joy to behold. But the bottom line is good football only gets you so far, and trophies are what the paying fans, shareholders, owners and players crave. Another barren season and a man who is already starting to have his doubters, could just find himself out of a job.

Areas to Strengthen

Phil Jagielka is the latest of a long list of Defenders that has been linked with a move to Arsenal this summer, with one target in Phil Jones already having signed for rivals Manchester United and the Gary Cahill front going cold. Well for now anyway. But it could be unlikely that there will be a huge influx of activity until the futures of the aforementioned Fabregas and Nasri are sorted out. Defenders are certainly needed, a strong goalkeeper wouldn't hurt and if those two do go some midfielder dynamo's will have to be added.

Expectation

A title bid has become the norm of expectations nowadays, with good showings in both domestic and european competition craved. It could perhaps be a little early to just this side, with a month of the transfer window still left and a long of ins and outs expected. Although even at this early stage it does seem that a title tilt could be out of reach, as could, dare I say it, a place in the top four.

United victory could have huge consequences

Yesterday's victory for Manchester United over Chelsea could have a big rippling effect on both sides. The Londoners must now be resigned to a season without a single trophy making it's way into the Stamford Bridge cabinet. A scenario that over the last few weeks we have learned won't please big spending owner Roman Abramovich one bit. Carlo Ancelotti could be on his last legs, despite last seasons double, and a summer of huge spending could be on the cards. Despite January's £70m+ spree.

In the northwest however, Manchester United are on the verge of greatness. Barring a huge collapse Sir Alex Ferguson has achieved his goal with a 19th league title, knocking neighbours and rivals Liverpool off that perch. Something Red Devils fans were ecstatic about as the exited Old Trafford following that 2-1 win.

Despite this massive achievement though, the biggest test is still to come. On Saturday May 28th at Wembley they will come up against the side thought to be the best in the world, Barcelona. A team who are just one point away from securing another league title themselves, and a team for whom Lionel Messi hasn't stopped scoring all season long. Pep Guardiola has led the praise for the soon to be English Champions, but knows he faces one hell of a challenge. If they go into the game fearing the Spaniards United will be obliterated, however if they take the game to them and give no space a double can certainly be achieved.

And after becoming the side to win England's top flight the most times what could be next record for Fergie to try and topple. Well adding a fourth European cup would put them one behind Liverpool's record haul. Now that would rub salt into the wounds and would delight Fergie no end. I certainly wouldn't bet against it.

Future Stars - Yann M'Vila

If like most football fans you keep an eye on the rumour mill, which seems to get crazier by the day, then the name Yann M'Vila won't have escaped your attention. Stade Rennes' 20-year-old defensive midfielder is making a name for himself in his native France, and could be charged with being one of the few to bring an ailing national team back it's best.

A whole host of European clubs are believed to have taken a look, Liverpool, Manchester United and the Milan's though are the names that are popping up most frequently. That's quite a list of admirers, so let's take a closer look at the young man.

After starting his career at Sains-Saint-Fussien where he stayed for three years, M'Vila had future stints at Ameins SC and Mantes before making his way to Rennes. After five years in the youth set up he made the step up to the seniors, and it was a match made in heaven. He became a key member of the squad in his debut season, and hasn't looked back. This season M'Vila has been key in Rennes charge up the table, where they are still in the hunt for a maiden Ligue 1 title.

Nationally representations have being earned all the way from the France under 16s side, all the way through to the seniors. Raymond Domenech chose to axe the midfielder from his initial 30 man World Cup squad, but in the new Laurent Blanc reign he is becoming somewhat of a mainstay. His hard working nature ensures he performs greatly in his defensive midfield role, but he isn't restricted to just this role. In addition to cutting out moves and passing expertly, he is comfortable going forward with thee ball at his feet.

It is clear to see why clubs are queuing up to take him, but it will no doubt take a huge offer to convince his club to part with such a key member of their squad. One thing though is for sure, will be hearing the name Yann M'Vila for many years to come.

Big week for Manchester City and Mancini

Manchester City face one of the biggest weeks of their season, with an away trip to Liverpool followed by the FA Cup semi-final. Although an away Premier League tie might not seem all too important, especially in semis week, just take a look at the Premiership table and you'll soon see why it is.

At this time Tottenham lie three points behind City in the battle for a Champions League spot. This time round it is the northerners who look in pole position, with Harry Redknapps men beating the blues to fourth last year with victory on their own Eastlands pitch.

It would of course be very tempting for Roberto Mancini to rest players tonight, considering the injury crisis facing Kenny Daglish and his defeat last time out at West Bromwich Albion. In addition to the fixture list which seems in City's favour, they have to play Liverpool while Redknapps men have both Arsenal and Chelsea coming up before they travel to Eastlands in May.

Resting players though would be a grave mistake, a victory at Anfield could breathe huge confidence through the squad before Saturday. City players shouldn't need a pick me up for a Wembley date with rivals Manchester United, but there's nothing wrong with added confidence. A win tonight would also give them a six point cushion, with Spurs having a game in hand against their bitter North London rivals Arsenal.

City fans though are quite rightfully looking past tonight and ahead to Saturday, to a game that could be huge for both clubs. United fans take pride in informing City how long it's been since they last laid their hands on silverware, while the Red Devils are in the hunt for a treble.

After the huge amounts lavished to Mancini a trophy coupled with Champions League qualification must be the least expected. And in all honesty, no disrespect to Stoke or Bolton, but whoever comes out on top on between Mancini and Sir Alex Ferguson will see their sides installed as huge favourites for the final.

We are very near the curtain call of the 2010/11 season, and this week could ensure it is a memorable one for the blue half of Manchester.

Fernando Torres showing promise for Chelsea

Since his unprecedented £50m move from Anfield to Stamford Bridge, Fernando Torres hasn't exactly set the world alight with sparkling performances. Indeed the sulky stroppy Spaniard who was on display for much of the season in the northwest appears to have travelled to London. As much as we have heard how much happier he is at Chelsea, and how the dressing room is cheerier, on pitch displays haven't reflected this.

It has also been mooted how it has been well over a year since he showed top form for Liverpool, with people also doubting if he would regain that peak he once reached. On Wednesday's evidence though, things are definitely improving. Despite ultimately ending up on the losing end, his movement, link up play and overall desire seemed back. Even if that final yard of pace was still awry.

At Liverpool, and largely for Atletico Madrid, Torres was the main man. For large periods playing as a lone striker, whilst also being the biggest fish in the pond. Chelsea though is different, he is a big fish amongst other big fish. And that lone striker role he thrived under, could be a thing of the past. With a strike force that also contains Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka, who have performed better of late, it is unlikely Carlo Ancelotti will drop them both on a regular basis.

Against Manchester United he once again caused problems for a defence, at times. Off the ball runs were much better, whilst the quick feet and trickery we are all too used too also seemed back. Add this to a shot off the post, and a header expertly saved by Edwin Van Der Sar and the signs look good.

It was always well wide of the mark to suggest he wouldn't get some form back, but if he improves on this the summit of the scoring charts could await next season. Especially if the planned spending spree at Chelsea goes ahead, service and support could be much better. It was all a matter of adapting, and on last nights display it seems to be going well.
