Future stars - Antoine Griezmann
![]() |
Griezmann in a buoyant mood |
It has not been an easy road for the 20-year-old, being rejected by several clubs after trials due to size. How many times have we heard that? However, after one such trial Griezmann drew admiring glances from several clubs. It was Real Sociedad who won the race though, where he has gone from strength to strength.
After progressing through the youth ranks, it was prior to the 2009/10 season when he was given a chance to impress in pre-season. It was't long before a senior debut came his way, appearing as a second half substitute in a Copa Del Rey match against Rayo Vallecano.
He has not looked back from here, being a regular member of the squad and could perhaps be another gem unearthed by the San Sebastian based side. It would be no suprise to see Premier League sides make a move for Griezmann in the future, with truly exciting wingers not commonplace on these shores. It is afterall his pace and skill that have put him on the map.
In 2010 a first appearance for France under-19s came about, in addition to a new contract at club level that reportedly has a buy out clause of around €30 million. After flicking between the under-19, 20 and 21 sides, Griezmann has now established himself as a regular member of the latter.
Currently nearing a century of appearance at club level, it wouldn't be a suprise if we seen the talented youngster make a move sooner rather than later.

Henry the returning hero

Henry netting last night winner against Leeds United |
Already immortalised outside the stadium of his beloved club, the Frenchman's celebration exuded the sheer delight of scoring on his second debut. Arsene Wenger summed up the situation saying: "He is a special player, he was already a legend here and he just added a bit more to the whole story."
While Henry himself remarked: "I came back from holiday 15 days ago. I never thought I was going to play for Arsenal again or score a winner. "I don't know what to say. I love the club and I hope I can do more.
"I hope it won't be the last one. The feeling I had when I scored was amazing.
"I rejoined the club as a fan; before I wasn't.
"Scoring a goal when you support the team, now I know how some of the guys who played for Liverpool or Man United or Chelsea felt when they scored a goal for the club they support."

Celebrating for New York Red Bulls |
The way in which he left in 2007 is now well and truly forgotten, when rumors of squad fall outs led to his desire to move on to Barcelona. His 227th goal in 371 appearances, including 12 in 12 against Leeds, is surely going to be added to during his two month loan spell from New York Red Bulls.
Whatever rollercoaster is ahead during this stint, it will be a pleasure to watch a master at work at a club which will forever be in his heart.

Future stars - M'Baye Niang

After initially being signed up as a 13-year-old following a tip off, Niang excelled in the academy and was eventually awarded a senior contract earlier this year. It was also rumoured that some of France's big guns were interested, but Caen beat off competition to sign the youngster.
Niang exploded on to the scene last season, becoming the youngest man to represent Caen in a senior match and also the second youngest to score in Ligue 1. This was as he went on his way to scoring three goals in just seven appearances, four starts and three from the bench, making the world sit up and take note. He has also represented France at under-16, under-17 and under-21, with the national progression of senior squad surely not too far away.
It is not too hard to see why so many teams are already beginning tentative steps to lure Niang away, with a strong physical presence but plenty of athletic ability with it, is there a league around in which he couldn't develop into a major force. However all this talk of the future is far too premature, and this best thing at the moment would be for him to stay and progress. A move at an early stage could be detrimental to his progression, and the best thing is for him to continue to get first team football where he is.

Arsenal

Goalkeeper
Defence

Forward
Manager
It is of no doubt to any of the footballing world the massive impact Wenger has had on the English game, with his brand of football also a joy to behold. But the bottom line is good football only gets you so far, and trophies are what the paying fans, shareholders, owners and players crave. Another barren season and a man who is already starting to have his doubters, could just find himself out of a job.

Transfer flops: Francis Jeffers

A teen prodigy at Everton, and another in a long line to have fallen by the wayside. A teen debutant at Old Trafford in 1997, it seemed like Francis Jeffers was going to take the Premier League by storm but what do we know?
After averaging around one goal every three games at Goodison Park, an infamous row with then manager Walter Smith over a pay rise spelt the end of his time on Merseyside. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger took a punt on the 'fox in the box', but he couldn't live up to the tag.
At around £8m he was one of Arsenal's most expensive signings, but poor performances and injury limited his playing time. Eventually leading to his Highbury exit. A loan at Everton didn't provide a single goal, and he was then quickly sold to Charlton in 2004. Despite a two year stay Jeffers couldn't even muster half a dozen goals, and since that move to The Valley he plied his trade at seven clubs in as many years
His travels have seen him move up and down England, before an unsuccessful stint at Australia side Newcastle United Jets. However he is now back in Britain and the Scottish Premier League, with Motherwell now giving the fallen idol a home.
Since leaving Arsenal in 2001 Jeffers hasn't even managed over 20 goals. That illustrates the fabulous fall from grace which the Liverpool born front man has endured.

Big week for Manchester City and Mancini

Manchester City face one of the biggest weeks of their season, with an away trip to Liverpool followed by the FA Cup semi-final. Although an away Premier League tie might not seem all too important, especially in semis week, just take a look at the Premiership table and you'll soon see why it is.
At this time Tottenham lie three points behind City in the battle for a Champions League spot. This time round it is the northerners who look in pole position, with Harry Redknapps men beating the blues to fourth last year with victory on their own Eastlands pitch.
It would of course be very tempting for Roberto Mancini to rest players tonight, considering the injury crisis facing Kenny Daglish and his defeat last time out at West Bromwich Albion. In addition to the fixture list which seems in City's favour, they have to play Liverpool while Redknapps men have both Arsenal and Chelsea coming up before they travel to Eastlands in May.
Resting players though would be a grave mistake, a victory at Anfield could breathe huge confidence through the squad before Saturday. City players shouldn't need a pick me up for a Wembley date with rivals Manchester United, but there's nothing wrong with added confidence. A win tonight would also give them a six point cushion, with Spurs having a game in hand against their bitter North London rivals Arsenal.
City fans though are quite rightfully looking past tonight and ahead to Saturday, to a game that could be huge for both clubs. United fans take pride in informing City how long it's been since they last laid their hands on silverware, while the Red Devils are in the hunt for a treble.
After the huge amounts lavished to Mancini a trophy coupled with Champions League qualification must be the least expected. And in all honesty, no disrespect to Stoke or Bolton, but whoever comes out on top on between Mancini and Sir Alex Ferguson will see their sides installed as huge favourites for the final.
We are very near the curtain call of the 2010/11 season, and this week could ensure it is a memorable one for the blue half of Manchester.

Future Stars - Romelu Lukaku

A week doesn't seem to pass by when his name isnt linked to another potential suitor this summer.
Arsenal, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Real Madrid and Inter Milan are just a handful of the names thrown up so far.
After making his way into football at the age of 6, it wasn't until seven years later he joined Anderlecht and his career began to show real promise.
A ridiculous scoring record for the youth squad saw Lukaku promoted to the seniors in 2009, where he impressed in equal fashion.
Upon turning 16 a professional contract was signed, and soon after came a senior debut for the teenage sensation.
He now has a record of almost one in two for his club side, and has also finished top scorer in the Belgian Pro League (or Jupiler Pro League).
In addition to this he is now a member of the senior Belgian national squad after two years in the under-21s, where his scoring has continued.
Constantly likened to a young Didier Drogba, it is rumoured the Ivorian has phoned Lukaku to talk up Chelsea.
Where ever he does end up though, he must ensure he doesn't end up like many other footballing prodigies e.g. Freddy Adu.
The jewel in the Belgian footballing crown, he could carry the hope of a nation for well over a decade.

Chaos at Manchester United!

Although still unbeaten and level on points with Arsenal, everyone connected with the club will be worried about how they just keep on throwing away leads.
Fulham, Everton and West Bromwich Albion have all recovered from going behind, while Liverpool also came from two down but couldn't hold on and Bolton Wanderers also put the frighteners on them by twice going ahead.
For a team and set of fans well used to winning this just isn't good enough.
And the rumours surrounding Wayne Rooney don't help at all.
It is looking increasingly likely that the former Everton hitman could well be on his way, sooner or later.
Real Madrid and Barcelona are possible destinations, with Chelsea and Manchester City also in the frame as it is known he is not keen on a move abroad.
The problems are centred round Rooney's new contract, which he is now demanding £200,000 a week, and the ankle injuries or lack of which have led to him being dropped lately.
Although it is no secret that he is disturbingly out of form, cashing in isn't an options for the club if they are to remain challengers on all fronts.
They still haven't recovered from the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo, so another prized asset going could be too much.
Especially if he just drifts across the city and joins the blue half of Manchester, who would certainly match his wage demands.
Added to the twist is the hype surrounding Sir Alex Ferguson, who could also leave the club if you believe such things.
This however seems way wide of the mark, after all he hasn't fully knocked Liverpool of their perch yet.
They are still clinging their by the skin if their teeth.
United will no doubt recover from this and be their by the end of the season challenging for honours.
Fergie will no doubt steer his ship through these choppy waters and emerge stronger than ever once more.

Time for England's new breed

Fabio Capello's troops face Hungary, a side ranked significantly lower in the Fifa World Rankings and one that should be tossed a side with little complaint.
However there are new faces in this squad, players who given a good performance could replace some of the World Cup 'stars' on a permanent basis.
Kieran Gibbs and Jack Wilshere are the most exciting of the new inclusions, with the Arsenal youngsters set to be main stays of the national side for years to come.
That is if they get enough game time for their clubs, which shouldn't be a problem give the fact that Arsene Wenger has rejected loan bids for some of his young stars.
Fellow Gunner Theo Walcott is also back, with Adam Johnson, Phil Jagielka, Joe Hart, and Bobby Zamora amongst others also getting a chance to impress the Italian.
Hart and Johnson are also future stars in the making, but the rest with have to put in a sterling performance to impress a deflated nation.
Hungary, boosted by Fulham man Zoltan Gera, aren't expected to do much in this game but secretly could just fancy their chance.
After all they are playing a side in disarray, deflated after a poor summer and further rocked by retirements of players called into the squad for this game.
What ever you think of Paul Robinson and Wes Brown though will be irrelevant come kick off, all eyes will be the Wembley pitch where a win is a must!
If either a poor display, a loss or both occur Capello really could have a problem on his hands with just a month to go until the European Championship qualifiers.

All this needless flirting!

I understand some people may point to the fact there has been other transfer sagas that have gone on for longer, think Gareth Barry and Cristiano Ronaldo, but this eclipses them all.
In the other two cases neither player made such a statement to the leave the club, although i know they both stated publicly on a few occasions.
But Fabregas seems to be stating it weekly, with a debatable plea to stay at Arsenal made a few weeks ago seemingly throwing his desires into disarray.
The fact is he has grown up a Barcelona fan, I presume you knew the other club in question, and it is inevitable he will leave to go back to Catalonia.
He is a self confessed fan of the Spanish Champions, constantly wishing them to do well and no doubt deep down wishing he was there himself.
Arsenal's, or Arsene Wenger's, refusal to invest heavily in the transfer market has no doubt sealed his fate.
The years of no success could be too much to handle for the youngster, despite his love of London and the Emirates based side.
It is at times unbelievable to believe that Fabregas is just 23 years of age, after so many years of being the lynchpin in the Gunners side.
But this incessnant flirting needs to come to an end sooner rather than later.
The constant public desires to stay far outnumber the one he made to stay at the club, while the latest debacle at the Spanish World Cup celebrations should be the final nail in the coffin.
'Forced' to do

These fluttering eye lashes aren't just all one way, as Arsenal seem to be kidding themselves into believing.
If sold now it would benefit both sides.
Barcelona would be getting the player they consider one of there own, after growing up in the much lauded Barca academy.
While Arsenal would have plenty of cash to re-invest in a squad that looks some way off the pace.
I know selling the best player would be largely criticised, however look what happened after the sale of Theirry Henry.
If Wenger could work that magic again, while splashing the cash Arsenal could find themselves in with a very real shout of the Premiership title.
